Mostly this is just a cut and paste from the documents at the summit with a few personal comments. A lot happens in a weekend so it was hard to just highlight a few things. I always find I get my money's worth out of a Google EdTech conference.

Hot words: Breakout (you can buy it for your class), student-centred learning, connection, empathy, hyperdocs, connected

Day 1

Besides the hype of discovery of new tools and technologies, embedded in this conference was a lot of good teaching practice. I found it more philosophical and focused on students, teachers, and good teaching practice compared to other Google conferences. After all, life is really first about the people, then learning and then geeking out. It is so much about the connection at these conferences. While I was a bit lonely and missing my Waterloo peeps, I connected with Peter Chan a teacher that specializes in technology and works some days at my school, Dorval Elementary. It proved to be so helpful. Chance Favours The Connected School (Teacher)... (keynote address). Peter suggested I visit Tanya Avrith. She was very passionate, and this helped fill the feeling of loss of my, oh so amazing and energetic peeps I usually have at these conferences. We always hung out together at these events and soaked it all up. Peter was wonderful and knew some of the people and gave me hints about good sessions. There seemed to be more passion in the room this year, even with a slightly smaller crowd. This kind of energy was missing a little in the other two Google Summits in Montreal. I'm a happy camper now.

Jason Markey ****** beautifully opened the summit with a presentation that demonstrated this student centred learning and empathy. Here's a link to his blog:

http://jmarkeyap.blogspot.ca/

"Future Ready is about agility fueled by empathy". Really glad empathy is being embedded into teaching. We need to share this in so many ways. If genuine empathy can be a part of a space or interaction when needed, the teaching and learning is so much more powerful. Working with fragile technology takes a lot of empathy on the part of teachers and students. The uncertain job future and cultural shifts will take vast amounts of empathy. Was hooking off church on Sunday, but felt like the keynotes are sermons for technology---absolutely necessary and needed.

This part of the keynote brought tears to my eyes when he brought a female tech teacher Amy Gorzynski (spoke about how she got to be a woman in technology) . She brought her Mexican female student, Hilda Mendoza who was afraid to go to coding camp as she had just started learning English. Amy encouraged her---results amazing.

Keynote Quotations

"I am what I am because of who we are"

"Sense of belonging and true community"
"Culture moves at a slower rate in poverty" This was one of Mackey's poor student's perspective. I have often thought that and never said it. The poor are forever disadvantaged.
"Empathy must be unconditional"
"Tolerance vs. Acceptance"
"Teaching for tolerance... " Words must become Action.

"An anthropology lover must be part of a learning culture for fresh eyes"

Closing session Day 1

Watched film the Most Likely to Succeed *****
Profound film that shows the way schools are heading

Avrith pointed out that there are Charter Schools in the States and there are "Charter Schools". One has to be very careful. This one pictured is likely good. It challenges students to solve their own problems. It makes the point we must have them consume, connect, create, reflect, present, curate, reflect - enjoy learning
